Well folks, I am back. Man, it has been way too long! So much has happened over the last few years, and I have really missed writing and teaching you all new things. I figured it was time.

So, allow me to come back with a bang! I have been watching various mixed media artists over the years, and I always struggled with a cohesive composition. One day, everything sort of clicked in my head and I was finally able to create a stunning piece of artwork that I am proud of.

I am not trying to “toot my own horn”, but isn’t it beautiful?

I learned that the most important thing to remember is to work in layers when it comes to this type of artwork. Texture is super important when it comes to the “found objects” style of mixed media. There are so many different ways to add texture to your pieces, but I personally love to start out with a stencil and some of the opaque matte modeling paste by Finnabair.

After the modeling paste, I will usually add some type of textured paste like Finnabair’s white sand. I like to add it in the empty spaces between the stenciled design. It just helps to make it look more vintage and grungy in my opinion.

One of my main GO-TO’s when it comes to mixed media, is GESSO! I have been using the black gesso also by Finnabair, and it works wonderfully. It has a nice matte finish, and it allows me to add color over my metal embellishments, as well as the rest of the piece. I like to use the black one because it tones down the colors in such a nice way.

I get my metal embellishments from various different locations, but one of my favorite places to shop is amazon. I am impatient and hate waiting for shipping, and you can’t beat the free amazon prime shipping times. Another wonderful place to find them is scrapbook.com, They have soooo many wonderful things that you can use in mixed media projects. They also carry the Finnabair products, and sometimes they are at a discounted rate!

Luckily for you guys, I was able to create a time lapsed tutorial for how I made the artwork above!
